Onion services and anonymous reporting channels

An entry point over the Tor network that lets reports come in without revealing where they came from.

Some reports only reach a business when the person behind them can be certain they stay unidentifiable. An onion service provides that route. It runs entirely inside the Tor network and needs neither a public IP address nor a DNS entry.

Is running an onion service permitted?

Yes. The Tor network and onion services are a technique for anonymising connections and are permitted in Austria. They are run by the Tor Project itself and by news organisations, among others.

Who uses this?

Newsrooms, non governmental organisations and businesses that offer an anonymous reporting point. The New York Times and the BBC run their own onion addresses so their content stays reachable where access is restricted.

What is SecureDrop?

An open source platform by the Freedom of the Press Foundation for anonymous tips, run as an onion service. For newsrooms it is the usual setup. Smaller requirements are usually met by something leaner.
