VMware alternative
What alternatives to VMware are there?
Since Broadcom acquired VMware, many companies are looking for an alternative virtualisation platform. The most common open alternative is Proxmox VE, developed in Vienna; others include Microsoft Hyper-V and Nutanix.
Broadcom changed the licensing: perpetual licences ended and bundled subscriptions became mandatory, raising costs for many small and mid-sized environments.
Proxmox VE offers clusters, high availability, live migration, snapshots and integrated backup without mandatory licences; vendor support is optional.
The safest migration is machine by machine: transfer, test and switch each VM outside working hours, keeping a way back until the end.
